What Is Paper Animation?

Paper Animation is a browser-based animation tool that converts still images and short text phrases into paper-styled motion clips, exported as video or GIF. It sits at the intersection of design and short-form video production — giving creators a fast path from a single asset to a shareable animated graphic without installing software or opening a video editor.

The tool offers four distinct styles. Paper Fold takes a PNG, JPG, or WebP image and runs it through a nine-stage crumpled-paper reveal sequence, with a choice of fold or unfold direction. The three text-based styles — Highlight, Magazine, and Press — each apply a different paper-inspired treatment to a short phrase, making them practical for animated titles, quote cards, and announcement graphics.

How the Workflow Fits Together

The entire process runs in the browser. You pick a style, upload an image or type a phrase, adjust settings like aspect ratio, frame count, colors, and texture, then preview the full sequence before committing to an export. There is no account required to try any style or watch the preview.

Export options cover the five aspect ratios most common in social publishing: square 1:1, portrait 3:4, landscape 4:3, vertical 9:16, and widescreen 16:9. The selected ratio applies to both the in-browser preview and the downloaded file, so what you see is what you get. Animations can run from 4 to 20 frames, which lets you trade off file size against smoothness depending on where the clip will be used.

One detail worth knowing: the video format — MP4 or WebM — is determined by the browser's encoder, not a user setting. GIF is always available as a separate download regardless of which browser you're on.

Who Uses It

Paper Animation is built around social and content workflows. Short-form video creators use the Paper Fold style to build image reveals for TikTok hooks or Reels transitions. The text styles are well-suited to podcast audiograms, where animating an episode title or guest name adds motion to what would otherwise be a static graphic.

Marketing teams producing social content for launches or campaigns can turn a headline into a short paper-style motion clip without coordinating with a motion designer. Privacy and Storage Considerations

Uploaded images are processed locally. The editor stores and works with image data in the browser and does not send it to Paper Animation's servers. This is worth noting for anyone working with brand assets or materials under client confidentiality.

Project data is also stored in the browser rather than in a cloud account. You can reopen saved work from the same browser on the same device, but clearing site data or switching to a different device will not carry the project over. For now, there is no cross-device sync or cloud save.

Pricing and Access

The free tier is genuinely usable. All four styles are available without payment, and the full animation preview runs for free before any export decision. Watermarked 720p exports cost nothing.

Paid exports use a credit system with no subscription. One credit covers a successful 1080p or watermark-free download — even if both options are selected together. Credits do not expire and stack when you buy more than one pack. Pricing runs from $1.99 for a single credit up to $19.99 for 200 credits, with the 50-credit pack at $9.99 marked as the recommended starting point. Checkout is handled by Stripe.

Unused credit purchases can be refunded within seven calendar days by contacting support.

What Is Still on the Roadmap

Several features are listed as coming soon: batch animation creation for producing multiple animations in one pass, support for custom paper textures, additional animation styles, and transparent PNG frame exports for use in Photoshop or Figma. The current tool is functional and complete for single-asset workflows, but larger campaign production and compositing use cases will depend on those additions shipping.
